HOUSE OF CHARACTER

14/15 Biccieni Alley

The Reception

Why this room has its own front door is a mystery. But it does. The door is fully functional, but not normally used. (Who needs two front doors?) There is a therefore a large wooden door attached in the 1990s in front of the original external doors. This could easily be removed.

The most attractive feature of the room is the glazed floor tiling.

A view of the reception room, including the doorway into the lounge.

The modern inner door behind the second of the two external front doors. Shown closed.

The inner door opened to reveal the original outer door, fully functional and the same design as the first front door (see vestibule).

Glazed tiles where the reception floor meets
the floor of the vestibule.

Panorama of glazed tiles in the reception.

Detail of tiling.

The change of tiles from the reception to the lounge. Note the much plainer style of the lounge tiles. I think the implication is that the two rooms that originally formed the space that is now the lounge were servants' quarters and therefore did not deserve the decorative tiling that we see in the vestibule and the reception.

View from the reception, all the way through the lounge and into the kitchen.

Fanlight over the second front door.

Recessed cupboard in the front wall, with glass doors.
