HOUSE OF CHARACTER

14/15 Biccieni Alley

Outside

A view down Biccieni Alley, Zabbar. (Or Biccieni Sqaq in Malti. Note that the "q" is pronounced Arabic-style as a glottal stop, so that "Sqaq" is almost unpronounceable for Westerners. The nearest approximation to the sound is "Suh-Uhh".) No. 14/15 is on the right -- a house with two front doors for unknown historical reasons.

Biccieni Alley seen from the roof of No. 14/15. The road that you see intersecting with the Alley is Main Street, where you will find local shops selling the essentials of life. Even a camera shop that sells paper for your computer printer. Note that Biccieni Alley is (just) wide to take road vehicles, but it is a cul-de-sac so there is no passing traffic. There are parking spaces in the nearby side-streets, about two or three minutes walk from the house.

The wrought ironwork spelling out "IHS"
above the second front door. The meaning is often contended, but
the Jesuits often interpreted it as "Iesus Hominum Salvator".
Malta is a deeply Catholic country and this feature is not uncommon
in older houses.

Looking up at the first-floor balcony
from the alley.
